Volunteering

The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization. We welcome newcomers of all backgrounds who are ready to get hands-on and have fun, regardless of technical experience or prior knowledge.

As a volunteer with the Roanoke Chapter, you will have the opportunity to learn skills in working on locomotives, passenger and freight cars, cabooses, air brakes, woodwork, metalwork, painting, heavy equipment, HVAC, and electrical systems—all essential to preserving Roanoke’s rich railroad history.

Volunteers are expected to wear close-toed composite or steel-toed boots, be an active members of the Roanoke NRHS, and be over 16 years of age (junior membership is available for those under 16).

If you are interested in volunteering, please complete a membership form, which is available on the membership page of our website.
