EMD SD 40 #1580

Built in May 1966 by EMD, the Norfolk & Western #1580 was the first of 30 SD40 locomotives ordered by the railroad. Designed for heavy freight service, #1580 spent two decades hauling revenue freight across the N&W system until 1986, when it was reassigned to hump yard service in Bellevue, Ohio.
In 1987, Norfolk Southern overhauled the locomotive, equipping it to operate with road slugs for improved efficiency in yard operations. #1580 continued to serve Norfolk Southern faithfully until its retirement in 2007.
After retirement, the locomotive was stored in operable condition in Roanoke and Altoona. In 2024, Norfolk Southern generously donated #1580 to the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, ensuring its preservation as a significant piece of N&W and NS history.
