EMD GP 9 #514

EMD GP 9 #514

Norfolk & Western #514 is a GP9 diesel-electric locomotive built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors in 1958. Designed to handle the railroad’s passenger operations, #514 directly replaced the iconic Class J steam locomotives that had served the N&W’s passenger trains for decades.

After the end of N&W passenger service in 1971, #514 transitioned to freight duty, where it continued to serve until its retirement in 1987. The locomotive was stored in operable condition by Norfolk & Western until 1992, when it was sold to the Tennessee Southern Railroad.

#514 remained in service on the Tennessee Southern until 2004, when it was sold to Indiana Boxcar. It later worked as a plant switcher for a grain co-op before being acquired by the Roanoke Chapter in 2024.

Today, #514 is being prepared for transport back to Roanoke by a contractor, marking the start of a new chapter in preserving this important piece of Norfolk & Western history.
