N&W 1407

VMTX 1407 is an MS-class baggage car built for the Norfolk & Western in 1927 by Bethlehem Steel. It served as a baggage and mail storage car on the Powhatan Arrow until 1978, when it was placed into storage. In 1982, the #1407 was gutted and rebuilt for use as a “tool car” in Norfolk Southern’s steam program, trailing behind locomotives such as the #611 and #1218. After the steam program ended in 1992, the #1407 was put up for auction, where it was purchased by the Roanoke NRHS. The car returned to service as a “tool car” during Norfolk Southern’s 21st-century steam program, reuniting with the #611 for the first time since 1992. In 2025, the Roanoke chapter of the NRHS traded the #1407 to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, ensuring that the #611 and #1407 would never again be separated.
