Passing of Dorr Tucker
Dorr M. Tucker Jr., 82, of Roanoke, VA, peacefully departed this life on March 16, 2026.

The three great loves of his life were his Lord, his family, and trains. Of these, his passion for trains defined much of his life’s journey. His fascination began in childhood, when his father would take him to nearby railroad stations to watch steam trains thunder by-moments that left a lasting impression and sparked a lifelong devotion.
After his family moved to Roanoke, Dorr’s interest in railroading continued to grow. In November 1967, the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society was formed, and his involvement with this organization would shape much of his life for the next 59 years. Dorr dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the Chapter, serving as the first editor of its newsletter, Turntable Times, a role he faithfully carried out for many years. He also served on the Board of Directors and contributed his time to numerous Chapter projects.
Dorr played an active role in the Chapter’s excursion trains, including the now-famous N&W 611, and was a member of the Virginian Station Committee, helping to restore and preserve the historic station for future generations.
Within the railfan community, Dorr was widely known as an accomplished and talented photographer. His work appeared in numerous railfan magazines, and his byline can be found in several books. A seasoned traveler, he journeyed coast to coast and north to south, often aboard Amtrak and special excursion trains, becoming a familiar and respected presence among fellow enthusiasts across the country.
Whatever role Dorr accepted, he carried out with unwavering dedication and reliability. He was someone others could always count on.
Above all, Dorr was a good and loyal friend, and a devoted husband to his loving wife of over 45 years, JoAnn Tucker.
Dorr is survived by his daughter, Tracy Robins (Daniel); granddaughters, Kylie Small (Bailey) and Sara Mobley (fiancé, Hunter); and two great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Elsie.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorr Tucker Sr. and Elizabeth Tucker, and his brother, Thomas W. Tucker.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2922 Corbieshaw Rd SW, Roanoke, VA 24015.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the National Railway Historical Society – Roanoke Chapter or Woodlawn United Methodist Church.
